Chris Fleming

Education & Training Director

Chris Fleming is a Professor of Economics and Dean (Research) at Griffith Business School. Chris teaches, researches, consults and provides public policy advice on the economic determinants of wellbeing and the sustainable management of the world around us. Formerly Director of the Griffith Institute for Tourism, Head of Research (Future Climate Transitions) for the Griffith Climate Action Beacon, and Director of Griffith University’s MBA program, Chris is an applied micro-economist, research interests include ecological and environmental economics, sustainable development, sustainable tourism, the determinants of subjective wellbeing, indigenous wellbeing and the economics of crime. A committed educator, Chris’ pedagogical approach stems from the ‘understanding by design’ framework, particularly the notions of teaching for meaning and authentic learning. Proponents of teaching for meaning take the view that teaching is more than covering content, learning is more than merely taking in, and assessment is more than accurate recall; meaning must be made and understanding must be earned. Proponents of authentic learning believe that the essence of inductive or high-end learning is the application of relevant knowledge and skills to solving real problems.
